False memories and social media

Two-thirds of young social media users admit to exaggerating their experiences on the likes of Facebook and Instagram. And a fifth of young people admit their online profile bears little resemblance to reality and that their recollection of past events has been distorted by their own fabrications…

…Dr Richard Sherry, clinical psychologist, warns that these distortions could lead to a version of false memory syndrome. "Recent studies show that memories are actually modified and less accurate whenever we “retrieve” them from our minds, to the point of entirely changing their nature over time," he said.
